Being “fit” in general means many different things to many different people. Being fit as a crossfitter is very different than being fit as a powerlifter or a marathon runner. All of these people are undoubtedly fit, but in different areas. You can accept crossfit's definition of fitness, but look elsewhere and you'll find many different, acceptable definitions.
True. You're not really pushing yourself. BUT you are still exercising. Keeping your body in touch with running rather then not doing anything for recovery. Simple, really.

well elliptical running is completely inaccurate, i run a 4:40 mile, and on the elliptical i supposedly ran a 3:10 which is completely ridiculous. there is no way to translate it into real running.
elliptical running is smoother on the body, much less rough than real running.
So if your body cannot sustain real running, then the next best thing is either the elliptical, or swimming.
